Wisconsin UU Congregations

Hello, Wisconsin UU's & chums!

Karen Wills here, your new coordinator for UU the Vote 2022 in Wisconsin (as of two days ago), so excited to be here and looking forward to meeting and learning from you! Thanks so much to those I've met already for the warm welcome and amazing work towards a multicultural democracy and Beloved Community.

WUUSAN, like all our UU state action networks, exists to link, amplify, grow and strengthen your justice work with one another and community partners. WUUSAN connects Wisconsin's UU congregations, big and small, with resources from the UUA organizing ecosystem. We are all part of an interdependent web of justice weavers.

This note brings links to what I'm learning about the fantastic work that UU's across the state are doing, with a taste of upcoming opportunities! By way of brief introduction, I've led MUUSJA, the Minnesota UU Social Justice Alliance for 3 years, and am just filling in during this crucial election to coordinate WUUSAN's campaign with UU the Vote. My background includes managing political campaigns & doing health care advocacy, teaching, research, and clinical practice as a pediatric  neuropsychologist. As a lifelong UU, I've taught R.E. and served on racial and social justice committees in 13 congregations over my 65 years of life. I'm a daughter of gay Dads and big sister/guardian for sibs with disabilities. I'm a white Scots-Irish mom, widow, writer and gardener, with roots in Boston, Los Angeles, Iowa City & Chicago.

About 16 people stand in front of a big RV bus with a banner saying Democracy Tour Building Unity Wisconsin and an American flag. They are standing in front of the Bradford UU church in Kenosha.

Today's Menu

What's cooking? Here's an initial menu (changing weekly) of what's on order for UU the Vote in Wisconsin. Of course, this will change and expand as we learn and share more about how UU's are showing up.

First, especially if you're new to UU the Vote or UUism, here's a link that explains why democracy is one of our religious principles. It's the Congregational Organizing Guide from UU the Vote, an excellent basic cookbook that also give experts room to improvise and invent.

Tuesday, September 20th, is National Voter Registration Day and UU's across the state are geared up to help. Don't worry if this is a last minute notice -- every one of these events welcomes last minute volunteers!

We hope you will covenant to share this work with your congregations, partners, and friends, and let us know what you're doing so we can celebrate it! Tag your social media posts with #UUtheVote so we can find them, please!

Towards justice, with joy.

P.S. I will be touching base with clergy and social justice teams in every congregation. Thank you to the Saint Croix Valley UU's for inviting me this morning and for being fabulous leaders of the LWV in their 3-county area! And, as a border congregation, being my "bridge" to Wisconsin 💌

P.P.S. Unitarian Universalists ROCK even more when we're in coalition. Send WUUSAN some dollars to make that happen more often and more effectively. Thank you so much!
